Another armed robbery on the Belaunde Highway leaves driver dead

The Fernando Belaunde Terry highway has a reputation as a lawless road prone to banditry and drug traffic; now another victim has been added to the death toll at the hands of these modern-day highwaymen. A 34-year-old bus driver was assaulted while about 16 kilometers from Juanjui in San Martin. It seems that he was shot while trying to escape on foot.

Only yesterday the Bean reported another robbery that ended in murder in a nearby section of the Belaunde highway, and the capture of a separate group of bandits working the southern part of the same road.

The Belaunde highway, also known as the Carretera Marginal de la Selva, runs along the Huallaga Valley from Tingo Maria to Tarapoto. We advise readers to avoid it wherever possible: travel is possible by light aircraft or recrossing the Andes and taking the Panamerican Highway along the coast.
