Another informal miner dies in Cajamarca

Another informal miner, identified as Félix De la Cruz Vásquez (24), has died in Cajamarca.

Informal miners work alone or in small gangs, generally trying to extract gold using primitive methods – a process that involves the use of dangerous chemicals such as cyanide and mercury, that are then allowed to pollute the surrounding region.

According to RPP Noticias, initial police investigations point to cyanide poisoning as the cause of death in this instance.

This brings the official death toll caused by informal mining to five, according to the Social Committee of the region; unofficially, it is known that there have been at least twelve victims.

Relatives and neighbors quickly carried De la Cruz to the local medical post, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
