Another investigation into Benedicto Jimenez

Anti-corruption state attorney Jorge Chávez Cotrina has opened a preliminary investigation regarding ex chief of the prison service Benedicto Jiménez, for supposed irregularities in planned purchases and contracts that he made during his 31-day period in office [ended by his dismissal due to allegations of corruption].

A number of officials are coming under the scrutiny of the investigation, as is Jiménez’s wife María Chirinos, who is said to have made personal use of an official vehicle.

Chávez took the case from the anti-corruption police in order to determine the level of responsibility attributable to Jiménez and his supposed accomplices. It has been alleged in the press that he contracted friends and supporters of his bid to become mayor of Lima as consultants paid by the prison service.
