Ministry of Education to hand out free glasses in the fight against illiteracy

The district of Pacaycasa in Ayacucho department was the region chosen by the National Program of Mobilization for Literacy (Pronama) to start a pilot program of visual health called “See to read” (“Ver para leer”).

Starting yesterday, their plan is to give prescription glasses to everyone in the Education Ministry’s literacy workshops who needs them.

“The pilot program will last three days and will benefit around 700 illiterate people of this region, who are organized into 59 literacy workshops,” said the Pronama executive director Ángel Velázquez Fernández.

He assured press that those involved in the scheme will be given glasses and, if necessary, offered eye surgery. There will also be specialist doctors on hand to help those with hearing difficulties.This scheme will be expanded into Huancavelica department and later in all parts of the country.
