Police have caught 175 drunk drivers in Lima so far this year

A negative statistic. Transit police in Lima have intervened in the cases of 175 drivers found driving under the influence of alcohol, with a large proportion of the arrests taking place during operations in Barranco, Miraflores, districts of the Northern Cone and in Asia, a beach resort 100km south of the capital.

The director of the transit police, Colonel Carlos Vallejos Passano, stated that the interventions took place mainly at the weekends, between 10pm and 7am. After being stopped the drivers are breathalysed to determine the quantity of alcohol in their systems, and then driven to the police station for more accurate testing. The legal limit is less than 0.5 grams per cubic centimeter of blood. [Editor’s note: this figure is incorrect, being hugely greater than the lethal dose: the journalist might have meant to say 0.5 milligrams)

To avoid accidents, Vallejo also advised against using a cell phone while driving, staying in lane, not breaking the speed limits and obeying road signs and traffic lights. He recommends the use of seatbelts at all times.
