Drizzle causes fire in Jesus Maria

The rain that fell over Lima during the early hours of yesterday morning led to a raging fire in a building in Jesus Maria. Water leaked into an electrical box, causing a short circuit.

Sources indicate that the fire started at around 6am, and that four fire engines were dispatched to contain it.

The fire caused serious proerty damage, but there were no casualties. Resident Vilma Santiesteban said: “We were all asleep, but I woke up smelling smoke and saw that the ceiling was on fire. I woke my sister and we ran out before the flames could trap us.”

A police investifation found that the electricity cables had come loose from the wall and ceiling, which combined with the intense drizzle caused the short circuit.
