The Public Ministry has extended by 45 days the preliminary investigation into supposed excessive spending committed by the presidential palace under ex-incumbent Alejandro Toledo. Ex first lady Eliane Karp is implicated in the process.

Jorge Chávez Cotrina, the anti-corruption state attorney in charge, extended the duration in order to conclude investigations into several aspects including the accounts, in order to determine responsibilities and make criminal accusations against those implicated for crimes against the public administration through misappropriation of funds and fraud.

Karp stands accused of using official funds to pay for luxury goods, hairdressing, flowers and dresses.

The Public Ministry claims to be awaiting the report on the case from the General Comptroller of the Republic. Its chief, Genaro Matute, announced to press last week that the report was complete.
