Air pollution causes 3,900 deaths in Lima each year

A recent World Bank report indicates that air pollution in
Lima causes 3,900 deaths per year. 12,800 people are hospitalized each year for respiratory problems caused by pollution.
The transport sector bears most of the responsibility, and the local governments of Lima and
Callao are being called upon to enforce emissions standards in their jurisdictions.

Poor maintenance of public buses has been cited as a significant factor in
Lima’s extremely poor air quality.
