Coca growers block the Belaunde highway

Eradication efforts in Tocache

Coca producers in the province of Tocache (San Martín) have set up two roadblocks on the Fernando Belaunde Ferry highway, which leads from Tingo Maria to Tarapoto. The blockade has affected hundreds of bus passengers, who have found themselves stranded on the highway as a result of this sudden action, which follows confrontations between coca producers and the national police.

Tocahe’s mayor David Bazán called an assembly in support of the growers, who have demanded that the government cease its US-sponsored program of eradication of the zone’s illegal plantations.

Reports suggest that the situation remains tense in the jungle city.
