Four criminals wearing ski masks and armed with revolvers yesterday assaulted five tourists while they were swimming under the waterfall of Ahuashiyacu, 16km from Tarapoto.

The muggers surprised the travelers, who included two Spanish and a Colombian, and fled with their money and jewelry. Their haul was valued at around US$10,000. Police sources state that the attack occurred at 1pm, and lasted about 20 minutes.

The tourists were staying at the Puerto Palmeras hotel, and had set out for a refreshing dip under the famous jungle waterfall. After threatening them, the criminals took all their belongings. As they were making their escape in the blue pickup that had been transporting the tourists they heard the sirens of the highway police, which caused them to immediately abandon the vehicle and seek refuge in the nearby jungle.

Police searched the zone, but no arrests were made.
