New defense agreement with Colombia on the cards

The Governments of Peru and Colombia will evaluate the establishment of a “two plus two” mechanism to bolster relations and trust between their foreign ministries and ministries of defense.

“We will probably establish a two plus two mechanism as we have with other countries, which allows better control of situations of defense and diplomacy,” said Chancellor José García Belaunde, speaking to Radio Nacional.

This issue will be discussed during President García’s visit to Colombia, where he was invited by his counterpart Álvaro Uribe. The one-day visit is scheduled for March 28th.

Peru already operates a “two plus two” mechanism with Chile, allowing relations between the two country’s chanceries and ministries of defense, particularly discussions linked to increased trust and military cooperation.

The Peruvian Chancellor underlined his country’s “very rich relationship” with Colombia, as well as mentioning the close collaboration between the two countries in the war on drugs.
