Bottled gas smuggling collapses the market in Bolivia

Bottled gas costs four times as much in Peru as it does in Bolivia, leading to heavy smuggling in the border region. As local demand in Bolivia is 998 tons per day and production is just 1,000 tons per day, this has led to a collapse in the market.

While Bolivian gas is easily available in Puno (Peru), in Bolivia housewives form long lines to buy it from delivery trucks and in major cities protesters are blocking roads with empty gas cylinders.
