US Ambassador backs Peru in war on drugs

US Ambassador James Curtis Struble said yesterday afternoon that the Peruvian Government is able to work a coherent policy and to defend its decisions in an effective strategy to combat drug traffic.

The diplomat made these declarations with reference to the recent protests in Tocache against the US-backed coca eradication program.According to CPN, Struble said that an effective counter-narcotics policy requires three elements: interdiction, eradication, and the option for growers to stop producing coca before forcibly destroying their plantations even becomes an issue.

He also said that the US Government will make strong efforts to reach a congressional agreement in favor of the planned Free Trade Agreement. He expressed optimism that this agreement will reach the US Congress before July.
