Alpaca-Vicuña cross born in Huancayo

In an experimental breeding program, the first true “paco vicuña” was born in Huancayo (Junín). It is a cross between a male vicuña and a female alpaca. The wife of the city mayor visited the new-born, which has been named Catalina, and offered to be its godmother.

“This is a marvel that we hope all our visitors enjoy seeing,” she said.

Catalina was born naturally in the Huancayo zoo, after an 11 month gestation period. The father is a male vicuña called Valentín, owned by the National Institute for Agricultural Research and Development. The mother is a four-year-old suri alpaca called Jacinta.

The new breed has a superior fiber to all alpacas, including the so-called paco vicuñas, which in fact have no vicuña genes but are rather a breed of alpaca selected to resemble vicuñas.
