Obregón welcomes coca decision, calling it a blow against drugs

The agreement made between the Central Government and coca growers, which includes the temporary suspension of the eradication program, has won a battle against drug traffic, said congresswoman and coca growers’ leader Nancy Obregón. “Both the government and the growers are winning, and we have won a battle against drug traffic. I think we can now say that we are going to start working together in a responsible way,” she told RPP.

The decision, announced by agriculture minister Juan José Salazar, put an end to a strike organized by coca grower in the jungle province of Tocache, San Martín. Obregón has now promised to work with the ministry to make plans for a national registry of coca growers, starting within the next thirty days.
