A gunfight took place yesterday between locals in Huancané and Juliaca police after the officers stopped a truck carrying contraband merchandise. Despite clouds of tear gas that the police used to control the disturbance, locals succeeded in regaining control of the vehicle. Police were forced to retreat and take refuge in the local military base, faced with violent attacks by the smugglers.
Locals emptied the truck on the invitation of one of the smugglers, who preferred to give his illegal stock away rather than see it fall into the hands of customs agents.
A 53-year-old woman identified as Pascuaza Muyisa Larico was seriously injured in the confrontation, and was transferred to the local hospital.
