President signs bill for universal healthcare

On Friday afternoon the Government promulgated a supreme decree that reorganizes the national Integrated Health Insurance (SIS) to offer medical insurance to all Peruvians, particularly the most poor. According to official information, this measure will make possible the goal of universal access to healthcare before the end of the year.

The modifications made to the SIS will allow full payment of medical costs for people who live in the poorest areas and who have no source of income. Furthermore, those who earn less that 700 soles per month (a little over $200) will have to make a monthly payment of ten soles for insurance, and those earning under 1000 soles will pay 20 soles.

According to the President, any person with an income under 1000 soles will be able to insure his entire family for 30 soles.

“Having health insurance is a fundamental and essential support for the unemployed or those with a low income, and who otherwise cannot afford treatment,” said President Garcia.
