Miraflores hotel closed over safety concerns

The Miraflores local government today closed an eight story hotel that lacked a Civil Defense certificate of safety, making a total of ten public buildings closed for failing to comply with the law in that district alone. The Hotel TAC, located on the intersection between Benavides and Roosevelt, was operating despite failure to attain the requisite safety standards.

This action on the part of the local government comes as part of a crackdown on unsafe buildings that started at the beginning of the year. So far six discos, a filling station, a recycling center and a car showroom have been closed by municipal order.  In most cases the closure is a result of failing to meet standards of safety or urban noise pollution, but the filling station was closed as it was located within 50 meters of three schools. The closure of the discos has caused controversy as many of them catered predominantly to the gay community, raising accusations of discrimination and homophobia. In six of the eight cases, the closure is a permanent measure.
