Democrats and Republicans agree on free trade with Peru

The Chair of the US House of Representatives and Democrat leader, Nancy Pelosi, announced at a press conference today that congressmen of her party had reached an agreement with the US government concerning future US commercial policy, which will allow the ratification of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Peru.

Pelosi stated that the agreement includes standards of labor and protection for the environment, fundamental principles said to be as important to Democrats as financial issues.

She said that the US congress has now reached a consensus on free trade, and that it is based on recognition of labor principles. She thanked Republican congress members and government figures, calling this “a very important step forward for trade agreements”.

She also said that there has been “great progress” concerning pendent trade agreements with Peru, Colombia, Panama and South Korea.

United States Trade Representative Susan Schwab, who was also present at the press conference, said that this marks recognition on the part of the Democrats that a large percentage of those who benefit the US economy are not US citizens.

Schwab praised the leadership of Pelosi and Democrat Charles Rangel, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, along with other prominent members of congress from both sides, calling this “a very important example of bipartisan cooperation”.
