Negroponte in Peru

John Negroponte, number two in the US State Department, arrived in Lima on Thursday to start an official visit to Peru, and met with government and civil representatives as well as President Alan Garcia, according to the US Embassy.

The visit by the Deputy Secretary of State is part of a Latin American trip that he is undertaking, including Ecuador as well as Colombia, Peru and Panama – the three countries with pending Free Trade Agreements with the USA.

Negroponte is also set to meet with Chancellor José García Belaunde and Education Minister José Antonio Chang, with whom he will discuss the education programs that are being funded by Washington.

He is accompanied on his official visits by the Sub-secretary for the Western Hemisphere, Tom Shannon.
