Combi accident in Huanuco leaves 5 dead, 4 injured

Four people were killed, among them a five-year-old child, when a combi fell from the Central Highway into the Huallaga River in Huánuco region.

The accident occurred near Huancahuasi in the province of Ambo when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which was headed from Huánuco to San Rafael. Police attribute the accident to excessive speed.

Local prosecutor Omar Palacios told Peru.21 newspaper that firefights had to use electric saws to cut the bodies out from the twisted metal of the wreck. Four people were recovered with injuries, and transferred to Ambo’s health centre.

Combis are generally small minibuses, used for cheap local transport in both urban and rural areas of Peru. They are almost always unlicensed and unregulated, and the number and severity of accidents involving them has led to the nickname “combis asesinos”, killer combis
