“Birth of the Amazon” tourism development almost ready

Officials have stated that the “birth of the Amazon” tourism project will be completed within a few weeks.

Based in the city of Nauta about 40km from Iquitos, it aims to offer everyone a chance to experience the primary rainforest of the region where the rivers Ucayali and Marañon meet, forming the Amazon.

Up until now, the only tourism options in the region have been three extremely expensive lodges, meaning that almost all visitors have been wealthy foreigners.

The construction of two low-cost hostels is planned for the near future, along with a 35m observation tower that will allow visitors to see the confluence of the rivers from above the canopy level.

The main attraction is the region’s wildlife, particularly the pink river dolphins.
